Chapter 8

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 8

The flames dissipated. I was still alive although my energy was rapidly deteriorating, so the Fyre on me died out. The man still clutched my arm and he was now unconscious again. I lay on the floor for a while, resting and then rose on my elbows to look around. We were in a seemingly abandoned hut. Light were falling in trough a shattered window so I was able to see the dust dancing in the turbulence of our sudden arrival. Birds were singing outside and I could see clear sky and trees outside the window. The hut itself was not very big. There was only one small room and a door hanging on one hinge. A rusty stove stood in the corner, a few rusty pots hung from the ceiling and two moldy chairs and a table stood underneath the window. The floor was covered in a thick layer of dust which had been thrown up when we dumped in.

The man was beginning to move now, so I got on my feet and carried him to one of the chairs. It creaked but was able to hold his weight barely. Now being able to look at him properly, it was apparent that he hadn’t eaten for some time; his grey and tattered clothes were hanging off of him. He was starting to wake up now, so I sat in the other chair and watched him awake.

He grunted, opened his eyes and looked around. He blinked a few times, looking around to figure out where he was and then looked at me. “Glad to see you made it.” He said in a strained voice. He attempted to stand up but collapsed into the chair again. “You should relax!” I said, but he dismissed it with a flick of his hand. “I need to check if we’re safe. Wait here.” He stood up, though barely able and stumbled to the door. He poked his head out and looked around. Through the creak of the door I could see a narrow gravel road leading away from the hut. Apparently content he attempted to close the door and then came back and sat on the chair. “My name is Santuric” He said “And you are chosen.” He looked at me with his weary eyes. “I am supposed to train you and guide you in the ways of the Fyre. That thing on the roof wasn’t your boss; it was an embodiment of the Yce that used his body as a puppet. Now, tell me your na…” But I cut him off, as sudden frustration, fear and confusion hit me. “What the hell is happening?” I blurted out “One moment I’m having a normal day, and then all this crap happens! Tell me what’s going on!” He didn’t seem startled by this, like he had anticipated this. “You are chosen to defend the Fyre, you have been granted a great gift and a great burden. I am here to help you comprehend it and train you. I’m not your enemy.”

I was still quite shaken, but something about this Santuric seemed to calm me down somehow. “Okay…” I said “Okay, explain all this then!” “Let’s start with the past; ever since the dawn of time there has been a war going on, between Light and Darkness, Life and Death, Fyre and Yce. This is what shapes our world, creates the nuances and the differences everywhere. This battle creates balance, and in the beginning it was just the two pure forces, but as humans emerged, some individuals were chosen for each side. This has always been equal and balanced, and so keeping the entire world in balance, but in the latest half decade the Yce has begun to grow uncontrolled. We expect this is because of the general changes in the world, but we’re not completely sure. Nevertheless, our numbers have been dropping and our council has now used our emergency plan. We all offered a part of our power to the Fyre for a special individual to be chosen. This is you. Your purpose is to defend the Fyre and so also defend the balance of the world. I know this is a burden, but you were chosen amongst all for your unique unfound attributes. I shall train you to prepare for this.”

I was silent for a moment. It made sense, although very strange sense. Maybe I had intuitively known this at those moments I had had earlier. “Okay.” I said “But I will need to know more eventually.” “Of course, but first we must rest.” He then walked over to the rusty stove and pulled out two holed blankets. “It’s getting dark soon, so we must use this for tonight. Tomorrow the work begins, so get some sleep.”

Chapter 7

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 7

The scene looked grim. The flaming figure was down to his knees, but the Yce was still going strong. The flames on him were getting smaller. The Fyre inside of me was still burning strong, but what was I to do against this kind of power? Then something happened. The wind disappeared, the column of Yce dissipated and the flames on the one coming to protect me were extinguished. I could now see his true form. He was a man in the autumn of his life, with a worn face but with a well muscled body. But now he looked like he was in pain, and indeed he collapsed to his side. A swirl came around the Yce figure, which split into several smaller mists that condensed into small gnome like Yce creatures. These began to advance on the man, although they seemed to have forgotten about me. A cold voice came from the Yce figure, one as cold and inhuman as I had ever heard. “You shall not live trough this one”

The minions formed up in a half circle around the man, he was apparently knocked out. The Yce creature growled and pointed at the man, and the minions advanced. This was where I acted. This man had tried to save me, and to no avail apparently. I couldn’t just let him be taken by these things. The Fyre on me blazed, and I conjured a massive ball of Fyre that I threw at the minions. This vaporized them completely. The Yce creature let out an angry grunt, and quickly turned his head to look at me. I stepped in between him and the man. “Step away kid, I will deal with you afterwards!” he growled. I remained where I were. I knew this was it, either I’d fight or I’d not get away alive. I conjured a Fyreball in each hand, and stood there, waiting. After a few minutes of silent staring, the Yce creature charged me, gaining on me at incredible speed. I threw one ball which he dismissed with a flick of the hand. I threw the other which hit it square in the chest. His forward momentum was stopped, but he still stood upright whilst being pushed back a meter or so.

I followed up by raising my hands and gathering energy above me. This formed into a massive amount of energy, gathering as a big ball of Fyre. The Yce looked up, spotting the massive Fyreball. It tried to summon its mist, but the ball was already thrown. It hit it, and it was engulfed in Fyre. For a while the Fyre roared on and nothing seemed to happen. I looked behind me, the man was still out, but was beginning to move a little. Then an explosion happened. The Yce had dismissed the Fyre and before I could turn to look and react, a bolt of Yce hit me. I fell and slid across the concrete, coming to a halt besides the man. I blacked out for a second, and then saw the Yce walking towards us. A swirl of mist was forming in his hand. Then something touched my arm. “We need to go, now!” the man said with a harsh voice. Then his grip on my arm tightened and flames engulfed us. The last thing I saw was a bolt of Yce being thrown towards us before we were gone.

Chapter 6

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 6

I could feel a massive amount of energy radiate from this new figure. Getting accustomed to the light, I could now see the whole scene clearer. The shining figure was engulfed in bright flames, and I somehow knew this was the power of Fyre. Nothing happened for a while. I just stood wondering behind the flaming figure, whilst they looked quietly at each other. Then, before I could do anything but being pressed into the wall by the sudden wind, the two figures had their arms stretched at each other, and two massive columns of Yce and Fyre collided between them. Where the two columns met, a giant cloud of vapor formed, blowing a strong wind outwards.

For a while, I couldn’t move in the mixed cold and warm wind, and then I heard a loud crack and all the windows in the surrounding buildings shattered. I couldn’t hear or see it, but I was sure people at the street and in the buildings were either fleeing or gathering around the scene. A sudden thought sprung to my mind. The innocent people couldn’t get hurt! This awoke a sudden feeling in my, making the Fyre around my head grow. I was able to resist the wind now, taking a few steps forward. The combatants were still going on just as strong, neither seemed to show any signs of weakness. I struggled to get to the edge of the rooftop. Now being able to look down, I was relieved to see the street mostly abandoned, but still a few people lingered, looking up.

I looked back, the two massive columns were still going strong, but the Fyre one seemed to be getting narrower. I looked at the flaming figure; he had fallen to one knee, with the Yce figure was still standing. Whilst looking at this scene, the Yce figure looked at me, a cold surrounded me, and a massive crack appeared in the concrete around me. The chunk began to slip and fall down towards the street. I had the chance to jump towards the roof for safety, but the thought never occurred to me, there were people on the street, with a giant concrete block falling towards them. I leapt over the edge of the block, freefalling towards the street, and again the instinct kicked in, only this time stronger.

A new sensation rose within me, and I gained more speed falling. In a split second it occurred to me I was being propelled on my own, simply being able to fly. I increased speed, the street coming towards me very rapidly. A woman with a child in her arms stood in the shadow of the falling block, looking terrified. I knew it was on now. Hoping I got the timing right, I turned just before I hit the ground, grabbed the woman whilst flying by her and got away just barely a second before the block smashed into the ground. I slowed, and put the woman down. She looked very shocked, but looked up at me. She caught my eye just before I looked up and hurled myself towards the roof again. I landed on the roof, only to arrive at a grim scene. The flaming figure was down to just about a meter of the Fyre column, and this was looking very thin. He was loosing.

Chapter 5

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 5

The sound from the city had been muffled to almost nothing in the thick mist. The grey blanket surrounding me was icy cold, and I couldn’t see even to the end of my hand. My Fyre was still burning, but now when the adrenaline was gone and the instinctual responses were gone, it began to be harder to upkeep the flame in this cold. I heard something scuffle behind me. I turned, but there was nothing there. Panicky I looked all around me, but I still couldn’t see anything. I had barely just been kicked into this thing, and it was already going to end no… *WHAM* something hit me hard in the back, and I slid across the roof. The force of the blow had been inhumanly strong, and I saw black spots across my vision for a moment. That blow ought to have crushed my skull, but the Fyre seemed to have protected me somehow. Maybe that was the key to getting out of this. I got on my feet, my back against a wall of some sort.

I searched my feelings. Last time, when I was falling, I’d had a surge of feelings before I was able to unleash the Fyre. I tried, but the shock of this whole thing, the icy cold and the throbbing at the back of my head dulled my senses. Out of panic, all I could conjure was rage. I stretched my hands forward and felt heat run from my body, down the arms and into my hands. I cupped my hands like when holding a ball and focused on gathering the heat from my hands. A tiny glint appeared hovering between my hands, and a split second later grew to a massive Fyreball twice the size of my head. The panic-fueled rage kept this Fyre going, and I cast my arms forward to throw the Fyre out at the mist. At first it worked like a hot knife through butter, the Fyre streamed right trough, actually cutting into it a few meters. But then, as if the mist had a mind of it own, it condensed around the Fyre and quenched the line of Fyre I had thrown at it. I began freaking out when I saw this, and the fear began to quell the rage.
My Fyre began to diminish, and the mist got denser. Now the fatigue began to set in, and I fell to my knees. The Fyre, both in my hands and on my head was now gone and breathing got harder. It felt like the cold was now seeping into my lungs, choking me and making my vision darken. The voice now came again from an unknown place in the mist. “The Fyre shall not be allowed to continue” All my feelings began to fade, and my vision was almost gone. I collapsed to the ground, gasping for air. My vision was now completely gone, but I could still hear the quiet of the mist, and a deep cold laughter.

Then, just before I gave up trying anymore, I felt a sudden heat and the cold was gone. I coughed, trying to catch my breath, but then felt my energy return to me in. I looked around and all the mist was gone. There was a shining person standing with his back to me almost right in front of me, almost too bright too look at after being in almost complete darkness, and further away there was a swirl of grey. The grey condensed and took form as the fat, icy figure of my former boss, looking very angry. I got to my feet, but the shining figure held a hand back towards me. “Stand down kid” It said “This is too much for you right now”

Chapter 4

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 4

The boss’ voice sounded from behind the door “Come in”. I slowly opened the door, and walked in. The boss was sitting with his thick head behind a newspaper. I closed the door behind me, completely shutting out the typing noises of the main room. Now the only sound was the tic of the large grandfather clock in the corner, the buzz of the computer behind the desk, and the slow creaking of the leather chair he was sitting in. I walked forward till I stood around a meter from the desk. The office itself was around the size of half a tennis court and had wall to wall luxury carpet, wooden panel walls and a big carved oak desk. A large window in the wall behind showed the view to the street many floors below.

He ruffled his newspaper, but held it before his face still. “You should KNOW that your mischief HAS been seen. This will NOT be tolerated!” He now lowered his newspaper and leaned forward in his chair whilst looking at me. “And my GOD, what have you DONE with you hair?” “I, uh, had...” I said before being cut off. “I DON’T CARE HOW IT HAPPENED! YOU ARE DISMISSED! Now get your stuff and LEAVE!” “What?” I said “On what basis?” This really pissed me off, what had I done. For a moment, the Fyre incident had left my thoughts. The boss leaned across his desk. “You DON’T ask questions here!” I took a step forward and looked him straight in the eyes. “Oh, you can’t just send me away without a good reason.” For a moment I thought a saw a glint of blue in his eyes, but then I felt a cold grip around my neck. He had grabbed me with his one hand whilst rising up so fast his chair bumped against the large window behind him. The he said in a slight whisper, very unlike him. “Oh, you do as I say!” Then he turned and with a superhuman force hurled me through the window behind him, launching me into the air 7 floors above the street.

For a moment of shock, I could only watch the cloudless sky above me. The wind rushed past my ears, blocking out the beeps and noises of the car traffic below. My mind was thoughtless with shock, whilst I fell in space. Then I saw the boss standing in the window I had just fallen out off. Then some primitive instinct kicked in, and everything seemed to slow down. I felt the heat rise once again, and the Fyre engulfed my head. I turned in mid air, stretching my arms down towards the ground. A blast of Fyre coming from my hands slowed my downward momentum, and lifted me upwards. I landed on the roof of the building opposite to my office. I wasn’t shocked; it was like it had all happened naturally. I turned to face the window I had been thrown out of; the boss was still standing there, and was looking very pissed. He took a few steps back, and then ran out the window, and made a huge leap towards where I was standing. In mid air, he seemed to crystallize, and I felt a chilling cold surround me. He landed a few meters from me, and his weight made cracks appear in a circle around him. Somehow I knew this was the Yce. The thing I had been sent to fight. He smiled whilst a thick mist seemed to appear from nowhere, surrounding me and leaving me unable to see even to the end of my arm. Then, from somewhere in the mist I heard, “No escape now”

Chapter 3

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 3

The Fyre lifted from my sight. For a moment of delusion, I had no idea where I was, but then I recognized my office cubicle. My monitor had gone black, and my coffee cold. The only sound that could be heard was the monotone typing of keyboards in the office, the printer in the corner and the hot-drink machine pouring almost non stop. I looked around. Nothing seemed changed. Maybe it was just a dream I’d had while nodding off or something?

But even if it was, what the hell did it mean? That wasn’t just an average dream. While still wondering what it all meant, I heard a whisper behind me. “Hey man, where did you g… What happened to your hair dude?” And now I noticed that all my hair had disappeared. Running a hand over my scalp, I looked at the little mirror I had on my cubicle wall. True enough, it was all gone. “Whew, did you burn it or something? It reeks!” “Uh yeah, had an accident whilst out lighting a fag… I’ve, uh, got to go to the bathroom now.” “Tough luck dude” Tom said before getting back into his cubicle. I rose from my chair whilst moving the mouse. The screen slowly rebooted, showing the desktop of my computer. The clock said 9.25, half an hour since I opened that email.

I walked out of my cubicle, passing all the others sitting there either typing away or doing some mischief. I went to the end of the room, to the door saying “Men’s room” I walked inside, and went straight to the mirror. There was a slight smoke coming from my scalp. What the hell was the Fyre that orb had been talking about. I was now quite sure it had been real in some way; Tom seemed to have thought I had been gone for some time. I took a piece of paper hanging besides the sinks, and held it between two fingers. If this was real, then I should be able to ignite this.
I stared at the piece of paper for a while. Nothing happened. I focused on the thought: make this paper ignite. Still nothing happened. I put the paper down on the table. I was a bit relieved, but still a little disappointed. I turned to walk out the door, and then heard a sizzling noise behind me. The edge of the paper where I had held it had begun to burn a little. And in the surprise of this new event, the heat on around my head seemed to reappear. And whilst my head ignited once again, so did the paper, disappearing into a large fireball.

So this was real anyway? I was overwhelmed with many different emotions, some weird mix of passion, knowledge, will and power. And I suddenly got a sense of knowledge of what was going on. The Fyre, it was a sort of power that I had been infused with, and that I could control at will. I tried to lower the Fyre, and the flames disappeared from my head, and just in time, as the door to the bathroom opened. Tom poked his head in. “Hey dude, the boss wants to see you. You better hurry, he sounds pissed.” I went out of the bathroom and began to walk towards the boss’ room, whilst still wondering what this all meant, even though the sudden revelation. I barely knew I was at the door, before I almost banged my head into it. I knocked twice.

Chapter 2

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 2

My head felt like it was burning; the flames were all I could see. It felt very hot, but I wasn’t getting hurt. Then the flames went away from my eyes, now lying as a sort of hair across my head. Now being able to see, I couldn’t see a thing. All was dark except the light streaming from my head. It felt like there was a floor, I wasn’t falling or anything. Getting on my feet I looked around. What the hell was happening? Where was I? I carefully tried to touch the flames on my head. My hand too just felt warm, not burned.

This whole plane was completely dark, not a light anywhere. I carefully took a step forward. But as soon as my foot hit the ground in font of me, it was like a huge explosion happened right in front of me, knocking me to the ground. The huge fireball raged for a bit, and then shrunk to a concentrated ball of red light. For a moment all I could do was look at it. Then I felt the enormous stream of energy surging from it. Energy as I had never felt before, of knowledge, of power, of will and of passion.

Then I heard a voice. Not as sound, not as a though, more like both at once. “You are the one who shall save the way of the Fyre. You shall combat the Yce. The Fyre is yours to control.” With this the red ball seemed to get smaller, or I was just pulled further away. And then the fire, or was it Fyre, filled my vision again, and all I could see and hear was the roar of it.

Chapter 1

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 1

Prologue

So this is where I am now? Of this battle that had been going on for eons, it HAD to be me to be the one to lead it? Why was it me, why was I the chosen one? Of all those who already knew of this conflict between the Fyre and the Yce, it had to be me? Looking around this winter landscape, it was hard to believe the innocent beginning I had come from. Left without Fyre, surrounded by my foes, my origins was still crystal clear to me…

Eight months earlier

It seemed like a good day today. Ever since I moved to San Francisco 5.5 years earlier from my home-country of Denmark, I had been working in this computer design corporation ever since. The sun shined on me as I walked down the road. Nothing special had happened to me today really, just your average late-April morning. I looked forward; the tall building containing my office loomed in front of me. Going in through the front door, I greeted the guard and went into the elevator. Someone was already in it as I pressed the button for floor 7, but I didn’t notice because of the coat the person was wearing, which blended in with the wooden backboard of the elevator. The thing that gave the person away was blue hair poking out around the waist. Our eyes caught for a second, I saw bright blue eyes staring back at me, but the rest of the face was concealed. We stood in silence as the awkward elevator music continued. We both got off at the 7th floor. She headed towards my boss’ room, I went to my cubicle.

This place was just a big square room with low dividing walls to make a lot of cubicles. It had taken me ages to just remember to find mine. I had only just sat down as my boss suddenly stood in the opening. “WHY ARE YOU LATE?!” he yelled. “Sir, I’m ten minutes early…” I answered. “DON’T TRY TO TEACH ME THE CLOCK! GET WORKING YOU SCUMBAG!” he walked off and slammed the door to his office. I caught a glimpse of that girl before the door closed. I booted my computer and Tom peeked over the wall. “He’s in a bad mood today eh?” he said. I leaned back in my chair and said “Does he even know of any other mood?” “Yeah, I guess not. We should get working I s’pose. Oh, by the way, check your email dude!” Tom sat down and I turned to my computer. Damn slow thing! It took ages to boot, so I went to the corner of the large office-cubicle room and got me a cookie and a cup of coffee.

I went back to my cubicle and saw my computer idle on the desktop. I booted fyrefox and went to my email inbox. Amongst a ton of spam I saw some invite from Tom which read ‘Tom Jerrie invited you to join Fyreball’. Curious what this new thing was, and also a bit stressed as I had a ton of work to do, I opened the mail and clicked the attached link. The browser opened the site and I had just enough time to see the ‘server error’ message before I got a huge zap from my mouse. Clutching my hand, I hurried out to the toilets and started to wash my slightly burned hand. Then the oddest thing happened to me, I began to feel really warm, the water on my hands started to vaporize and then my body seemed to catch on fire, but I didn’t get burned. The fire began to fill my vision till the point where I could no longer see, and my hearing too, and I started to suspect that I was no longer in the room.

The Fyre Chronicles

Chapter 1

Prologue

So this is where I am now? Caught in despair, enemies surrounding me and without my Fyre? No one can help me now, but I must fight to the end. And still in this late hour I remember how it all began, back then in the time of innocence and of ignorance of these events, when I still knew nothing of the fight between Fyre and Yce. And I wonder why it was me? What made me special enough to become “the chosen one”? How did this all begin?

1 year earlier

It was a good day today. The sun was shining bright, and there was not really any traffic. I was on my way to work, in the computer design office. Whilst going by the lake, something bright caught my eye. Down by the waterside something shiny was reflecting the sun. But even before I could turn my head, it was gone. I just dismissed it as some garbage, a piece of glass or whatever.
I arrived at work ten minutes later, parking my car in the lot across the road from the office building. Walked in the front door, greeted the guard and took the elevator to the 7th floor where my office was. But as soon as the door opened, the boss was right on me. “WHY ARE YOU LATE?” he yelled in my face, followed be a shower of spit. “Sir, I’m ten minutes early. Maybe you didn’t adjust your clock after daylight savings?” This just seemed to get his face even redder. “DON’T COME HERE AND TRY TO TEACH ME THE CLOCK! GET TO WORK!” And with a slight ringing in my ears and a partially soaked face, I went to my cubicle.

Whilst booting my computer, Tom in the cubicle next to me peeked over the wall. “Hey, way to start the day dude, the boss is not in a good mood today it seems”. “Yeah, the least he could do would be to get the time right” I replied. “Yeah… We probably should get to work then. Oh and by the way, I send you an email you should see.” “Okay, Tom” I said turning to my now booted computer. Logging on to the internet, I went to my email folder. And there, amongst a ton of spam, the mail from Tom was. “Tom Jerrie invited you to join Fyreball”

Wondering what the hell Fyreball was I clicked the link. And then something weird happened. My face began to feel very hot, and suddenly all I could see was fire. But I didn’t get burned. And amongst the panic, I had a suspicion that I was no longer in my office.
